American universities remain the most popular for thousands of international students. Over the past several years, the number of students attending colleges in the country has been steadily increasing. The Institute for International Education estimates that approximately 700,000 international students are enrolled in American universities and colleges annually.
The US remains the most preferred destination for many international college students. This is despite the fact that the UK, Canada, Australia, and other countries are ramping up their efforts to attract international students. With an annual international-student-enrollment of around 350,000, the UK is still the second most popular destination for foreign students.
A significant number of those foreign students are Asian. It is estimated that about 62% of international students in the US come from different countries in Asia. This compares with only 13% of foreign students coming from Europe and about 10% from Latin American countries. Here are the top three universities with the highest number of foreign students enrolled, based on data from the Institute of International Education.
Columbia University in New York City is the oldest higher educational institution in New York City. It currently operates seven Colombia Global Centers overseas — in Beijing, Istanbul, Amman, Mumbai, Paris, Nairobi, and Santiago. This university is known for conferring the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. It is affiliated with a greater number of Nobel laureates than any other educational institution globally. Not surprisingly, it has the largest foreign student population, accounting for about 26% of all international enrollment in the country.
Undoubtedly, Cambridge in Massachusetts has become popular among foreign students because it is the site of the prestigious Harvard University. This is logical because it is the mother institution of eight US presidents, 75 Nobel laureates and 62 living billionaires. It also houses the country’s largest academic library, one of the largest in the world. About 23% of foreign students in the US are enrolled in university.
University of Southern California
The oldest private research university in California has the largest population of international students in the US. About 22% of the total foreign students in the country are enrolled here. Its location in Los Angeles, California is particularly strategic in building relationships with other research institutions throughout Asia and the Pacific. California has some of the best universities in the United States.
