We are used to talking about Lyon as the capital of fashion. I think that this title is not usurped and that Lyon deserves the title of the fashion capital. I was in Lyon five years ago and I took advantage of my trip to visit the fashion stores. I was getting married in New York when I got back and I was also looking for a suit for my wedding.
I was with my future wife and we were shopping around when we found the tailor store. I had never bought a custom-made suit and I thought this would be a good opportunity to buy one.
My future wife encouraged me to enter Samson’s a tailor in Lyon. As I was a foreigner, they accepted to receive me without an appointment, because normally, to go to a bespoke interior in France, one had to make an appointment by phone or on the Internet.
So I had to look for my future wedding suit with the help of my wife.
I discovered a range of suits made to measure to marry exceptionally, and I had to choose among several models exposed or in photos. Being afraid to choose a photo model, I preferred to limit myself to the models exposed in the workshop of this craftsman. I made the first choice of three wedding suits with different cuts, different fabric qualities, and therefore different prices.
The suit I chose cost about 800 € that is to say about 850 $. Not being used to custom tailors, I discovered that I had to take my measurements on the spot to make my suit.
The suits are made in Europe, with high-quality fabrics, far from the Chinese quality that can sometimes be found all over the world. We had an appointment to come back the following week to receive my new custom-made wedding suit.
We returned to Samson’s on the scheduled date and I was able to try on my new wedding suit. My wife was thrilled to see me in my new suit, which fit perfectly, and she congratulated me on my appearance.
She was already picturing herself in her wedding dress next to me in my brand new suit. It’s a funny experience to have a custom-made suit, you feel perfectly comfortable, and you already imagine yourself congratulated by others.
So we returned home to the US and got married two months later. Our wedding was attended by our family and friends. Many of my friends asked me where I had bought the suit, thinking that I had bought it in the USA. They were surprised to learn that it was a European suit that I had bought in France during my vacation.
Some were disappointed that they could not buy a suit of the same quality in the US. In the US, we don’t have the same culture of tailored suits and we buy suits like we buy a car.
Of course, there are tailored suits in the US, but I notice that not many Americans buy them. Some of my friends have told me that they would take advantage of a future trip to France or Europe to buy a European-made suit.
On my wedding day, I gave the address of my French tailor to several of my friends who wanted the same type of suit. My wedding was a success and when I look at my wedding pictures, I am always reminded of that trip to France where I finally bought my wedding suit.
