Dhaka ranks 40th in the list of most expensive cities for foreign workers

For foreign workers, living in Dhaka ranks costs more than in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Washington DC in the United States. Even if the neighboring country stays in the famous city of Mumbai in India, the cost for foreign workers is less than in Dhaka. New York-based company Mercer has come up with this information in this year’s ‘Cost of Living survey.

Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, is the most expensive city for foreign workers, according to the survey. The least expensive city in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

According to the results of the survey published on Tuesday, Dhaka ranks 40th in the list of 209 most expensive cities. In the same survey last year, Dhaka ranks 26th. In other words, in this one-year interval, the position of Dhaka in the list of expensive cities has changed by 14 steps. As such, the cost of living in Dhaka has come down a bit compared to last time. Mercer has made the annual list of the most expensive cities considering the cost of accommodation, food, and travel. This time Ashgabat has risen one step ahead at the top of the list. Hong Kong lost the top position and moved to number two. Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, has moved up 42 places to the third position. The rest of the list of the 10 most expensive cities are Tokyo in Japan, Zurich in Switzerland, Shanghai in China, City of Singapore, Geneva in Switzerland, Beijing in China, and Bern in Switzerland. On the other hand, Bishkek is followed by Lusaka in Zambia, Tbilisi in Georgia, Tunisia in Tunisia, and Brasilia in Brazil.

According to the list, the living expenses of foreign workers are less in Dubai than in Dhaka. The city is ranked 42nd, two steps behind Dhaka. Less expensive cities than Dhaka include Bangkok (48th), Washington DC (51st), Munich (52nd), Melbourne (59th), Berlin (60th), Moscow (62nd), Stockholm (62nd), Mumbai (8th). 94th), Delhi (117th), Doha (130th), Kuala Lumpur (152nd), Bangalore (160th), Istanbul (183rd), Kolkata (181st), Colombo (185th), Islamabad (199th), and Karachi (201st). Dhaka has been at the bottom of the list of livable cities in the world for years. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) publishes a list of livable cities each year. Dhaka ranks 137th out of 140 cities in this year’s list. In other words, Dhaka is the top city in the world as uninhabitable. The three cities above Dhaka are Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea (136th), Lagos in Nigeria (139th), and Damascus in Syria (140th). Auckland, New Zealand tops the list as a livable city.

There are also observations inside the country about the cost of living in Dhaka. The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) says that the people of the capital have to spend more and more money to survive in Dhaka for three consecutive years. Of these, spending has increased the most in 2020. On June 17, CAB released a report titled ‘Report on 2020 on a few relevant issues related to the cost of living and consumer interests’. It has been said that last year the cost of living in Dhaka increased by 7.6 percent and the price of services increased by 7.31 percent. In 2019, it was 7.50 percent and 7.8 percent respectively. In the previous year, it was 8 percent and 5.19 percent.
